Getac Adopts Sony’s SORPLAS™ to Lead the Way in Sustainable Rugged Technology

Getac Technology Corporation is making strides toward sustainability by incorporating Sony Semiconductor Solutions’ (SSS) SORPLAS™, an environmentally conscious plastic, into its premium rugged devices. This initiative underscores Getac’s commitment to reducing environmental impact while delivering high-performance, reliable technology.

What Is SORPLAS™?

Developed by Sony Semiconductor Solutions, SORPLAS™ is a groundbreaking plastic that achieves an impressive 99% utilization rate of recycled materials. Designed for durability, SORPLAS™ performs exceptionally well in high-temperature and humid environments where traditional plastics often fail. In addition to being highly functional, it is also aesthetically versatile, making it a preferred choice across industries, including Sony Group products and beyond.

Compared to traditional flame-retardant polycarbonate resin, SORPLAS™ production significantly reduces CO2 emissions. Its properties remain intact even after repeated recycling, offering a sustainable, high-quality alternative for technology manufacturing.

Integrating Sustainability with Innovation

Getac has been steadily increasing its use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials, aiming to meet the dual demands of sustainability and reliability. The first step in integrating SORPLAS™ began with the launch of the S510 rugged laptop, the world’s first AI-ready rugged laptop, and the next-generation K120 fully rugged tablet, known for its versatility. These devices demonstrate Getac’s ability to deliver environmentally friendly products without compromising the performance rugged industries require.

A Commitment to Future Generations

Mike McMahon, President of Getac North America, emphasized Getac’s dedication to sustainability:
“Getac is firmly committed to creating a more sustainable future through environmentally responsible design and manufacturing. Implementing SORPLAS into our rugged devices is a significant step forward, and we look forward to expanding this effort across more products to safeguard our planet for generations to come.”

Eita Yanagisawa, Senior General Manager at Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation, echoed these sentiments:
“The technology industry has a collective responsibility to protect our planet. SORPLAS embodies this mission, achieving an exceptionally high utilization rate of recycled materials. We’re thrilled to partner with Getac to bring this technology to a broader audience.”

Why This Matters

This collaboration between Getac and Sony represents more than just an environmentally conscious initiative; it reflects the future of sustainable technology manufacturing. By adopting SORPLAS™, Getac is helping to reduce the overall carbon footprint of rugged device production while maintaining the durability and functionality its customers rely on.
